Joint Letter to Health Select Committee
On 2 June 2006 the College of Mental Health Nurses released a position statement calling attention to health concerns related to the police decision to introduce Taser stun guns into frontline policing following an initial trial scheduled for September this year. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists has also published a statement expressing concern at this development. Our specific concerns relate to the fact that the police have identified people in mental health crisis as a group which may be targeted for the use of Tasers. (Another group is people who have taken recreational drugs.)
